Woman dies after stabbing at Minnesota playground
GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. — A 20-year-old woman died Tuesday night, April 17, after police say she was stabbed on a playground at a Grand Rapids elementary school.
Police were called to Murphy Elementary School at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, where they found Chere Morgan, of Grand Rapids, lying on the playground unconscious with a stab wound to her abdomen.
A 15-year-old Grand Rapids boy was standing next to her with a knife in his hand, police said. He was taken into custody at the scene.
Morgan was taken to Grand Itasca Hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.
The boy made a first court appearance today in Itasca County on felony charges of second-degree murder and sale of a controlled substance in a school zone. Authorities did not identify the suspect Wednesday, and the Itasca County Attorney’s Office has filed a motion to try the juvenile in adult court.
Police believe the two arranged to meet at the playground, and drugs were found at the scene, Grand Rapids Police Chief Scott Johnson said in a news release. The meeting was not related to the school, and the public is not in danger, Johnson said.
