A carpentry student has received a national outstanding student award from the National Association of Home Builders.
Tyler Erickson, 22, of Hibbing is finishing his carpentry degree at Minnesota State Community and Technical College Wadena Campus. He was nominated by his carpentry instructors for the award.
Ericksons grandfathers both did a lot of carpentry work and Erickson worked with them when he was younger, he said. Thats when he became interested in construction, he said.
With graduation May 11, Erickson already has a job lined up. After graduation, he will work for Wes Hanson Builders in Crosslake. Erickson will do finish work, such as window trim, floors and railings.
All the nice finishing touches in a house, Erickson said.

During his two years in the carpentry program at the college, Erickson has helped build two homes. He enjoyed the class trip to the International Builders Show in Orlando, Fla. in January. At the International Builders Show, construction workers can see the latest products.
For fun, Erickson likes to hunt and fish. He also does wood working such as coffee tables and end tables, mostly for his mom. He doesnt plan to make a lot of them for a side business because its tedious work, he said.
While Erickson likes the finish work he will be doing and is excited about his job at Wes Hanson Builders, he would like to eventually do other carpentry work. He hopes to run his own construction business after a few years working for someone else.
I want to do it all, but I can settle for a while, he said.
