Casper "Cap" Schwartz

Casper Joseph Henry Schwartz, 90, of Wadena, passed away on Oct. 16, 2008, in Wadena.

He was born on March 14, 1918, in Bluffton to Carl and Lena (Peffer) Schwartz. He graduated from St. John the Baptist School in Bluffton. After that he worked for his mother and many local farmers.

On Aug. 27, 1940, he married Loretta Agnes Rebischke at St. Ann's Church in Wadena. Their marriage was blessed with seven children. In April 1945, he was drafted into the Army for nine months in Birmingham, Ala. He was presented the World War II Victory Medal.

On Jan. 30, 1981, he retired from Todd-Wadena Electric Cooperative where he was employed for 38 years. After his retirement he was a substitute teacher for Wadena Technical College. He was a volunteer fireman for the Bluffton Fire Department. He sold monuments for 22 years for Dent Lakes Granite and volunteered for St. Ann's Cemetery for 25 years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 212 of Park Rapids. He was an active parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church in Bluffton and St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena, where he was a member of St. John's Society and a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He ministered Holy Communion to the home bound for many years.

He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with family, fishing, playing cards, visiting people and sharing his wit.

The Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, Oct. 20, in St. Ann's Catholic Church in Wadena, with the Rev. Donald Wagner as celebrant. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery in Wadena. Honorary pallbearers were George Wynn, Sylvester Schmith, Ben Tellers and Tom Ludovissie. Active pallbearers were Bruce Guck, Bradley Guck, Michael Mohs, Mitchell Mohs, Gerald Schwartz and John Rebischke. Arrangements were with the Johnson Memorial Home in Wadena ( www.johnsonmemorialhome.com ).

Survivors include his son, Gary (Jean) Schwartz of Park Rapids; daughters, Deian (Ronald) Guck of Hastings, Marjorie Mohs (Harry) Harrison of Wadena, Sister Jean Schwartz, OSB of St. Joseph, Barbara Besett of Bonita Springs, Fla., Audrey Davis of Ottertail, and Mary (Greg) Lunzer of Stillwater; 23 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; brother, Raymond Schwartz of Los Angeles; sister, Anne Schwartz of Cologne; sister-in-laws, Marge Rebischke of Rosemount, Minn., Ruth Rebischke of Spring Valley, Wis., Rosella Sonsteby of Anoka, and Johanna (Armand) Barasa of Anaheim, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Sylvester (Frankie) Rebischke of Eagle River, Alaska, and Lawrence (Caroline) Rebischke of Anchorage, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Loretta, on Feb. 4, 2008; parents; son-in-law, Roger Mohs; a granddaughter; sister, Rosella Schwartz; brothers-in-law, Henry Schwartz, Ferdinand, Wilfred, Joseph, Lloyd, and Jerome Rebischke; and sister-in-law Catherine Schwartz.
