The Cardinal girls swimming team finished third in their own triangular on Sept. 18 at the Staples Community Center.
Detroit Lakes took first place in the final event, the 400 free relay to edge out the Yellowjackets by three points, 131-129. The Cardinals finished a distant third with 56 points.
"As the score indicates, we were overpowered by both teams," Cardinal coach Bruce Onischuk noted in an e-mail.
The best finish for the Cardinals came from Kirstin Iverson, with a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:21.02 and Tonya Givans with a third place finish in the 100 backstroke in 1:16.46.
Onischuk said in spite of the score, the girls did have some season-best swims. The Cardinal 200 Medley Relay team of Givans, Iverson, Alicia Johnson and Catrena Branchaud had a season best time of 2:10.53 and the same group banded together to finish the 400 Free Relay in 4:25.49.

Caitlyn Kreller had her first shot at the 200 free and she did a nice job for the first time out, according to Onischuk. Ashley Maki finished a respectable 0:33.93 in the junior varsity 50 free.
The Cardinal swim team hosts Mid-State Conference foe Park Rapids 6 p.m. today (Thursday) in Staples.
