A car crash west of Staples on U.S. Highway 10 on Nov. 26 allegedly led investigators to a sex offender who had failed to register the vehicle, which is a felony.
The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. and the driver was not with the car. While police were processing the scene, a cell phone inside the car rang, which turned out to be the roommate of James Paul Quenzer, 26, of Verndale.
Quenzer's roommate allegedly told police that Quenzer had purchased the car about a month before.
Police records showed he did not register the vehicle, which he is legally required to do.
Quenzer was charged Jan. 4 with failure to register as a predatory offender. Quenzer has a previous conviction for failing to register on March 3, 2005. His original sex crime was from June 1, 2001.
