Board approves Conditional Use Permit for JK Gun Sales

Commissioners approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for Jesse Koskiniemi at their Feb. 3 meeting to operate a home-based gun sales business at his father Lester Koskiniemi's home in Lyons

Commissioners approved a Conditional Use Permit (CUP) for Jesse Koskiniemi at their Feb. 3 meeting to operate a home-based gun sales business at his father Lester Koskiniemi's home in Lyons Township. Jesse recently moved to the home to help with the farm work.

Koskiniemi has run the gun sales business since June 2012 and holds the necessary Federal Firearms License, regulated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, known as ATF.

The county planning commission recommended approval of the permit after holding a public hearing to consider it on Jan. 15. No one appeared at the hearing to speak against the issuance of the CUP.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a one-year tobacco sales license for Blueberry Pines Golf Club.

• Approved the hiring of Jeffrey Hulse as a Casual Part-Time Sheriff's Deputy, meaning that he will work 100 hours or less per year.

• Approved the hiring of Stephanie Hertzog as a Permanent Part-Time Jailer/Dispatcher.

• Approved county support for the Trail Breakers Snowmobile Club's application for a Federal Recreation Trail and Park Grant to replace a bridge north of Yaeger Lake with a culvert. The property is owned by the DNR. If the grant is approved, the bridge will be replaced in 2016 with no expense to the county. The Trail Breakers will pay all expenses not covered by the grant.

• Accepted the resignation of Lori Miller as supervisor of the Social Services Adult Unit, effective Feb. 28.

• Accepted the resignation of Krystal Roberts as a Child Protection Worker at Social Services, effective Jan. 30.

• Approved the recruiting of employees to fill these two Social Services positions.

• Heard an informal report on the Ag Society's plans for the County Fair to be held June 24-28. Ag Society President Mike Olson told the board that the Ag Society has contracted with groups to provide a carnival, bull ride event, pig race and several other attractions during the fair. Olson told the board that the Ag Society is still waiting for FEMA reimbursement of the costs of replacing Ag Society buildings destroyed by the June 17, 2010, tornado.
