Blue Devils fall in third-place game

Abby Mergen scored twice as the Rangers topped the Blue Devils for third-place honors in the Schwan Cup Tournament's Green Division.

The Rangers grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first period and matched the Blue Devils the rest of the way.

Leah Dykhoff scored a pair of power play goals for the Blue Devils.

"This was a good, solid effort from the girls," said Blue Devils head coach Jim Conrad, who gave special praise to the efforts of Katelyn Peters, Leah Dykhoff, Hannah Vandenburg Sam Killian, Cassie Behl and Kellie Casperson. "A great effort was put forth but the girls came up just a little short."

Ellen Sackrison had a five-point game as the Orioles clubbed the Blue Devils in Schwan Cup Green Division semifinal play.

The Class 2A Orioles, who paired up with Benilde-St. Margaret to win the state consolation championship last year, peppered Class 1A Blue Devils goalie Sam Gorka with 50 shots in the game.

Carly Kuhbander and Megan Berens backed up Sackrison with four-point games.

The Blue Devils were held to 10 shots on goal.
