For the second week in a row, the Wadena-Deer Creek track and field teams headed back up to Bemidji State University for another high school track and field meet. The Wolverine boys team placed 10th of 32 teams on April 4 at the Little Amik II Invitational, scoring 29 points.

The biggest story had to be the repeat performance of Wolverine senior Eric Asfeld. Asfeld once again captured the Male Outstanding Performer award for the second consecutive week by winning the 55-meter hurdles, 400-meter dash and earning runner-up honors in the 200-meter dash. He ran a personal best 7.95 in the 55-meter hurdle finals and set another personal best in the 400 with 53.19.

Little brother Cory Asfeld was the only other Wolverine placer, finishing eighth in the 3,200-meter run with a personal best time of 11:14.05.

Eric scored his points indoors, and Cory did his outside. With the weather being nice, the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs plus the 4x800 relays ran outdoors while the sprint and field events were held indoors, Wolverine coach Terry Olson said. That really saved a lot of time with 1,700 competitors.

The Wadena-Deer Creek girls finished 21st with 11.5 points. The highest placer for the Wolverines was a fifth in the 4x800-meter relay consisting of Kelsey Browne, Jessica Salge, Emily Wood and Hannah Toedter. Three of these four girls also placed individually with Toedter earning sixth place in the 1,600 meter with a time of 6:01.6. Wood was seventh in the 3,200 with 13:25.6, and Browne finished eighth in the 1,600 at 6:08.7.

Brigetta Berg tied for seventh with a pole vault of 8 feet. Molly Barrett finished with a personal record in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 11:14. Jesse Salge ran a season best 400 in 80.28 after helping the 4x800 team place fifth.

The Wolverines traveled to Moorhead for the East/West Classic on Tuesday and then head to Long Prairie today (Thursday) for the LPGE Invitational beginning at 4:30 p.m.
