For some, spring allergies can lead to asthma, which if not controlled, could be life-threatening.

People who have asthma dont necessary have allergies (supersensitivity to allergens). And those with asthma might not have not have allergies, said Pat Malvin registered respiratory therapist at the Tri-County Hospital in Wadena.

However, many people with allergies also have asthma, she said.

Asthma, a lung disease that causes difficulty breathing and has conditions that vary from person to person, can be triggered by many different things, such as exercise or allergens.

Many people are affected by the pollen and molds, Malvin said.

Though allergy-induced asthma can be life-threatening, it can be controlled and people can live successfully with it.

People need to know what triggers their asthma, Malvin said.

They should follow the programs their doctors prescribed, she said.

For some people, avoiding allergens can be big changes such as removing all carpets in a house. Some people dont hang bedding outside to avoid them coming in contact with allergens.

If allergies are a trigger, people need to get rid of the allergens, Malvin said.
