Alice Backberg, 96, died March 13, 2006, at Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena.
Alice Martha Dorothea Katharina Backberg was born on Nov. 15, 1909, to Fred and Anna (Spars) Juergens at Bartlett Township in Todd County. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church most of her life, having been baptized, confirmed and married in the church. She remained a faithful member until her death. She married Carl Backberg on March 18, 1931, and they celebrated their 70th anniversary in 2001. She worked as a nurses aide at the hospitals in Staples and Bertha. She hated to retire because she enjoyed working in surgery, control and supply as well as with the patients. Her husband, however, wanted to do some traveling. Alice also liked knitting, crocheting, tying quilts, gardening, cooking and baking and playing Skip-Bo with her friends.
Her funeral was March 16 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bartlett Township in Todd County with the Rev. William F. Moeller Jr. officiating. Casketbearers were grandsons Kent Smith, Jon Smith, Greg Anderson, Dan Backberg, Bruce Backberg, Mike Booth and Greg Meller. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Bartlett Township with Domian-Anderson Funeral Home in Bertha in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include one daughter Harriet (Wendell) Kimber of Bertha; one son, Philip (Babe) Backberg of Merrifield; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and one sister-in-law, Irma (Henry) Juergens of Island Lake, Ill.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 2001; one son, Gordon; parents; one sister, Minnie Rach; six brothers, Dick, Fred, Bill, Jack, Harry and Henry; and two infant siblings.
