$4,000 cash is returned to Wadena man

A local man took out this ad in the Wadena Intercom looking to thank the person that returned his belongings.

A rural Wadena man continues to have a great faith in humanity after momentarily losing $4,000 cash and his phone last week at the Wadena Walmart.

Steven Harris said he was out shopping for dog food over Labor Day weekend at Walmart where he apparently set his possessions down and walked out of the busy store. He stopped at another nearby store, Dollar Tree, and attempted to buy more merchandise when he realized he no longer had his phone or billfold.

"At first I was just kind of freaking out," Harris said.

Staff helped him search for his items there but he eventually retraced his steps back to Walmart where the billfold, phone and all of the $4,000 cash had been returned to the customer service counter.

"The thing is, I never carry cash with me," Harris said. He said the reason he had the large sum of money was he just sold an ATV and hadn't made it to the bank yet. Upon finding that everything was brought to the customer service counter he was amazed not only at whoever brought it there, but that the employees were honest enough not to take the cash either.

Walmart assistant manager Paul Bernstetter said all items turned in to Walmart staff are handled securely. He said he recalls being handed the items by a female customer but did not know who she was.

"I deal with more honest people than dishonest people," Harris said.

Not knowing who did the good deed, Harris took out an ad in the Wadena Intercom, the Wadena Pioneer Journal weekend shopper, asking the person to give him a call so he could personally thank them. Harris had not heard back from the person as of Monday, Sept. 10.

While he considered not including the dollar amount in his ad, he felt it was important to show the community that someone was willing to turn in that amount of cash.

"It's something for the community to be proud of," Harris said.

Though it would have been a big loss of money, Harris said at the time, he was more concerned about all his identification and bank cards that he would have had to replace. He said if he had lost the money he thought that maybe it was going to someone that really needed it. He said keeping a positive attitude about life tends to help him have more positive outcomes.

"People can chalk it up to whatever they want," Harris said about the goodness he saw. "Down deep, we're honest people ... we try to be good people. Most of us are not 100 percent on anything. We've all got our flaws, but by and large I see more honest people than not."
