After an increase in park use in 2017, Wadena County Board members approved improvements to county parks this spring.

Commissioners Chuck Horsager and Jim Hofer spoke of a park board request to dress up campgrounds around the Crow Wing River. New fire rings had been approved previously, and will be installed throughout the campgrounds. New picnic tables will also be brought in for Old Wadena, Tree Farm upper campsites and Stigman Mound. The board approved the purchase of 13 regular picnic tables and four ADA accessible tables. Tables will be made of treated lumber as park board members felt it would be easier to replace parts if vandalism occurs.

Hofer noted there is still around $200,000 in that reserve fund for such improvement projects. Work on a pavilion at Old Wadena has begun with site work. The structure will go up near the current picnic shelter in the park. It's being built by Verndale company JR Construction. The park board is also considering work to add a roof over an ox cart on display and fix deteriorating wooden steps leading to the river.

Park board members recently voted to keep park fees at $12 daily. Park board members include county commissioners Jim Hofer and Chuck Horsager; and citizens Trina Lind, Jerry Mevissen, Bob Swenson and Dorothy Kennelly.
