Book Ends, monthly meet-the-author event in Wadena, welcomes Minnesota novelist Julie Schumacher on May 12. Schumacher is a Minnesotan who authored a wide range of novels, short stories and recently a coloring/activity book for academics. When not raising the bar for contemporary fiction or skewering academics, she chairs the Creative Writing Department at the University of Minnesota.

An Explanation for Chaos (1997) is a collection of super-literary short stories, many of which are told from a young girl's point of view. Schumacher knows her way around female relationships.

Dear Committee Members (2014) is a series of recommendation memos from an English professor at a not too fictional Payne University. The novel has won several awards and was shortlisted for more.

Doodling for Academics (2018) reads like Schumacher's revenge for the conventions, traditions, and idiosyncrasies of college English academia. Fun and funny, but unfortunately spot-on.

Book Ends meets on second Saturdays of each month at The Uptown in Wadena at 11 a.m. One hour of conversation and short readings is followed by Q&A, books sales/autographs and lunch. There is no charge for the event. Lunch is on the attendees.
