Neil Janson advanced to the Upper Midwest and T.J. Steward won the Sportsmanship trophy as Wadena hosted the Region IV boxing tournament Friday and Saturday at the National Guard Armory.

Janson was declared the unopposed Class A champion at 123. He will now see action in the Upper Midwest April 19-20 at the Palace Casino in Cass Lake. The Upper Midwest tournament will have boxers from Minneapolis, St. Paul, Central Minnesota and North Dakota squaring off. Upper Midwest winners advance to the National Golden Gloves tournament in May at Las Vegas, Nev.

Janson already had his trip to Cass Lake sewed up when he faced St. Cloud 114-pounder Gian Paulo Grubjt Saturday. Grubjt was the winner in a first round TKO.

Steward lost his 152-pound bout with St. Cloud’s Greg Whalen on a split decision.

Other Wadena fighters seeing action Saturday were John Johnson at 141, Dewayne Steward at 165 and Joe Mench at 178. Johnson “was in poor shape” for his fight with St. Cloud’s Joe James according to Wadena boxing coach Bob Tubandt and lost by a decision. Steward ended a three-year layoff when he entered the ring against St. Cloud’s Angel Pacheco. The three-round fight was non-stop and Pacheco was awarded the victory by split decision. Mench was defeated by St. Cloud’s Victor Hernandez.

One of Saturday’s top fights was a battle between Brainerd’s Blake Herron and Willmar’s Eloy Zavala. Zavala won the 132-pound bout on a split decision and went on to the Best Boxer trophy. Herron was also honored for his performance in the match when he was awarded the Fightingest Fighter trophy.

The St. Cloud Boxing-Wrestling Club took Class A team championship honors.

Wadena heavyweight Elliot Stoll saw action Friday in a regular bout and scored a third round TKO against St. Cloud’s Rory Anderson.

Verndale’s Adam Umland lost a decision in his 92-pound fight Friday with Jake Koskela of the Iron Range team. Verndale’s Matt Umland lost a split decision to 95-pound foe Ryder Grove of the Iron Range.

Jim Rude was awarded the Fan of the Year award by the Wadena Boxing Club.
