"The Unchosen Ones," a new book by award-winning Minneapolis-based photographer R.J. Kern, will be featured on the BookEnds Online Edition. The event is Saturday, March 12 at 11:30 a.m. via Zoom.

The book features portraits of Minnesota 4-H members posing with their farm animals. Each one spent a year raising an animal, which they then entered into a 4-H competition.  Although none succeeded in winning an award, despite the obvious care they had given to their animals, the photographs reveal the self-directed dedication of America's future farmers, according to a Wadena County Historical Society news release.

Born in 1978, Kern's photographs are inspired by the mater landscape painters of the 19th century.  While illuminating the ephemeral beauty of youth, Kern probes the current realities of agrarian practices, aspiring to enhance awareness and interest in the changing face of American pastoral life.

After the Zoom meeting, a recording of the program will be available on the website WadenaCountyHistory.org.
