Construction on firehall-police station

In 1969, construction was soon to commence on a new firehall-police station. Bids came in totalling $202,660. Construction was planned to be handled by multiple contractors. The new building was designed to house a 20-man volunteer fire fighting team along with seven fire trucks.

Babe Ruth Invitational Tournament

Wadena hosted a Babe Ruth Invitational Tournament with Staples North, Staples South, Wadena North, Wadena South, Park Rapids, and Verndale. The Verndale team managed to fight their way to the final round and emerge victorious.

Scorching heat

Temperatures exceed 100 degrees in early August, 1999. Construction workers in the area were subjected to scorching temperatures while on the job. Working with tar only exacerbates the hot conditions. The tar, while being transported, clocks in at 250 degrees.

Acid on highway

Highway 10 had to be closed after a semi truck with a ruptured tank leaked sulfuric acid onto the road. Emergency crews pumped the remaining acid into a different tanker. The spill was contained.
