If you dream of a day devoted to German food, drinks, dirndls and lederhosen, look no further than Wadena as two such opportunities are planned this fall in the community.

A 'Drastic' Oktoberfest coming Sept. 28

Since opening in March of 2019, Drastic Measures Brewing has been rolling out a variety of beer concoctions. Business owner Ashley Doebbling said in the previous brewery she and husband Brett were involved in, Disgruntled Brewing, there was an Oktoberfest, but the one they plan to host in Wadena will be a full off-site event within Burlington Northern Park.

The family friendly event includes games, music and costume contests. Doebbeling wants to encourage people to prepare for the games, which include traditional log sawing, barrel racing and hammerschlagen, a game in which you compete to strike a nail into a stump with a hammer. Doebbeling adds there will be pumpkin decorating, pie eating contests and more.

Vendors will also be on site offering more to see and do while you visit, including food from local German food favorite Oma's Bread. Doebbeling said she's been trying to involve other area businesses to join in on the event. Event goers that bring in a receipt from a recent purchase at a participating store can use it to take 50 cents off a beverage. Of course, Oktoberfest includes a unique brew for those able to drink alcoholic beverages.

Doebbeling said a main band was not yet picked out for the evening but it will be one to dance along with. Expect some polka during the day activities. Watch for more news on this event in the near future as plans become final.

Wadena Library's wurst party ever Oct. 11

Wadena City Library staff and volunteers traveled to Hawaii in the dead of winter to raise money for the new library, now they invite you to Germany for Wadena's second Oktoberfest of the season.

The event goes from 6 - 9 p.m., Friday, Oct. 11 at the site of the planned new library, the old First National Bank of Wadena. Like the luau-themed event in March, this one will take event goers on a trip, this time to Germany to indulge in adult beverages and help the library come closer to their fundraising goals. The event includes beer and wine tasting, hors d'oevures and a silent auction.

Tickets can be purchased at the current library for $20. Admission is $25 at the door, the night of the event.
