The second annual Wadena Area Churches Vocal and Instrumental Concert is set for a 4 p.m. start April 28 at the Wadena Memorial Auditorium.

The event welcomes in the community to listen to choirs, solos and instrumental pieces from a number of area churches including Immanuel Lutheran Church, Alliance Church, United Church of Christ, Joyful Spirit, St. Ann's, St. John's, Southbrook Baptist, Zion Lutheran, Epicenter and Assembly of God.

Deb Haraldson, one of the directors of the event, said the event last year had such an overwhelming response they had to bring it back again. The event was held at the Immanuel Lutheran Church last year. The Memorial Auditorium will provide more room for those attending, and space for the large groups to perform on stage.

The event started as a branching out of the community meal, also a Wadena Ministerial Association event. The concert is a fundraiser for the Ministerial Association, which works to serve those in need in the community.

The main purpose of the Ministerial Fund is to help people in need with the "small stuff" before it becomes the "big stuff." This can include gas and food vouchers, or emergency housing.

It's also a way to bring people together in the community to spend time together.

"It's a nice way of bringing people together in our community," Haraldson said.

Highlights of the event include choirs from Immanuel Lutheran Church and St. Ann Catholic Church, solo vocalists and instrumentals including tuba and clarinet solos, as well as a mass choir bringing together the whole group. Nearly 20 performances were part of the event last year.
