WADENA — The holidays are not all that merry for some families in our area who have little to put on the table, let alone under a tree.
That's why the Empty Stocking Fund has been hard at work for the last 96 years to make sure that more and more families have reason to celebrate this time of year.
You can join in the sharing by donating money or goods to the project now.
Drop off gifts of new hats, mittens and toys for boys and girls age 0-7 by Dec. 5. You can drop them off at the following locations:
Magnifi Financial, 1776 Clothing Company, Hometown Crafts, Merickel Ace Hardware, West Central Telephone, Pioneer Journal, Wadena State Bank, Mid Central National Bank or Todd Wadena Electric Cooperative.
Organizers say that, last year, 228 families received a Christmas meal and 618 children received gifts from the funds raised for the Empty Stocking Fund.

Recipients are referrals from the school counselors of the schools of Menahga, Sebeka, Bertha –Hewitt, Verndale and Wadena-Deer Creek, local church ministers, MAHUBE-OTWA, Public Health and Wadena County Human Services. No direct requests are accepted.

The 96th Annual Empty Stocking Fund Talent Program & Radiothon will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at the Wadena-Deer Creek Middle/High School Commons from 7-10 p.m. or listen live on KWAD 920 AM/101.7 FM or online at WadenaRadio.com. Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of "staff." Often, the "staff" byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
