Twenty-nine WDC Business Professionals of America members participated in the State Leadership Conference for BPA March 11-14 in Minneapolis, where they competed against other Minnesota chapters.
Wadena-Deer Creek High School came home with four first-place finishes -- the most ever received, according to advisor Sandy Bain. WDC also had 16 places from second to 10th place, and 14 places from 11th to 20th place.
WDC has 14 students who have qualified for national competition, which will be held in Dallas on May 5-10. Those advancing are Kendra Grothmann, Heather Haman, Kayla Kephart, Justin Tucker -- first place in administrative support team; Amy Brown, Michael Paulson, Elizabeth Quincer -- first place in economic research team; Rachael Carlisle and Haley Kellogg -- first place in presentation management team; Nikki Miller -- first place in basic office systems; Angie Lorentz -- fifth place in integrated office systems; Haley Anderson -- fifth place in desktop publishing; and Bradley Becker -- sixth place in desktop publishing. Also qualifying for their Ambassador Torch Awards were Katie Anderson, Amy Brown and Elizabeth Quincer.
Along with competing at state, the BPA chapters also attended the Timberwolves game. After the game, the students were invited down to the court to shoot some hoops -- Kendra Grothmann sank her shot!
Bain, who's served as BPA advisor for 12 years, was very pleased with WDC's performance.

"Our school will have one of the most entries at the national competition from Minnesota, with the students competing in about 10 different events," Bain said. "I'm extremely proud and want to congratulate all the BPA students on their outstanding performance at the state competition and representing the communities of Wadena and Deer Creek."
