Wayne's Discount says goodbye after 28 years
After almost three decades of service, Wayne's Discount is closing its doors Dec. 31.
Signs advertising store wide sales can be seen from the windows of the long standing shop. Being inside the store once make it evidently clear it holds much history and to a certain extent, is synonymous with Verndale. A place where customers and clerk take a vested interest in home improvement, hardware, plumbing, and maybe even candy.
Wayne Mills co-owned the variety store with his wife, Vicky, the pair decided to close shop after deciding to retire. "It's been hard, we have no plans for retirement," commented Wayne about his reasoning for closing the store. As of now, no buyers have come forward interested in purchasing the business.
"We knew it was time to get out of here," said Wayne, when asked about the troubles of closing a store that was around for so long. Over the course of 28 years, Wayne has amassed a lot of store related items and products. He was surprised by just how much the small shop had in storage that now must be removed.
Initial close out signs indicated that prices would be 25 percent off all items. That sale will soon increase to 50 percent off.
Wayne said the best part of owning his own business was "helping people with their projects, just seeing people every day." The store offered a wide variety of goods with an emphasis on hardware products. Everything from embroidery patterns to plumbing parts could be bought at Wayne's Discount. They even sell discount candy which according to Wayne is one of their best sellers.
"Finding out the new hot item was always frustrating, we learned to stick with the basics," said Wayne reminiscing about the challenges associated with operating a business.
Wayne's Discount is located at 110 South Farwell Street in Verndale.
