ST. PAUL -- Something can be done about gun violence in Minnesota. Gun rights and gun control advocates generally agree on that point, but they don't necessarily agree on what comes next. "To do nothing ...
ST. PAUL -- Minnesotans must loudly demand that lawmakers approve Sunday alcohol sales if the proposal has a chance to pass, its Senate sponsor says. Sen.
Minnesota minimum wages would rise from $6.15 to as much as $10.55 an hour under bills lawmakers are examining this week. The proposal's first committee votes could come this week. Two wage experts told a House committee Monday that, despite what opponents say, raising the minimum wage would help the state economy. "We've seen a continuing pulling apart" between the rich and poor, Douglas Hall of the Economic Analysis and Research Network told House members. Hall said that studies show that higher wages help the economy and they do not hinder employers' hiring.
Friends and family of Adam Menze, the Ottertail pilot who died in a plane crash last week, remember him as an "amazing" family man who was full of faith. Menze, who crash landed near Parkers Prairie last Wednesday, was an experienced flyer. Those who knew him are calling this a freak accident. "I flew with him numerous times. He was a good pilot, never did anything crazy or silly," said Grant Smith, a friend of Menze's, and a pilot himself. "He's done a lot of cross-country flying over the years and he's a very competent pilot." Menze knew what he was doing in the air.
Two horses are dead, and two others reportedly near death, in an animal neglect case on a farm seven miles southwest of Vergas. The Otter Tail County Sheriff's Department received a call about the animals Sunday morning. As many as 10 horses at the site need rescuing, though that number is still unconfirmed, according to the sheriff's department. Those animals are reportedly still alive, but neglected. The sheriff's department is working on the case with the Minnesota Humane Society.
WEST FARGO - For the past year, 13-year-old McKenna Robertson has been dealing with the impending loss of her dog, Piper. The 8-year-old Shih Tzu, who sleeps on McKenna's bed at night and snuggles with her on the couch, has a tumor on his colon. Veterinarians say he doesn't have long to live. When McKenna, of West Fargo, found out her dog only had a few months to live, she would cry whenever she saw him, she said.

Readers frequently tell me that what they like about this column is that it is filled with mostly simple, everyday food that is easy to prepare. There is no better resource for that type of tasty recipes than the community, family and church cookbooks lovingly compiled with tried and true family favorites. One of the best cookbooks I've come across in a long time is Hannah's Heavenly Delights! Hannah Circle of Bethany Lutheran Church in Nevis uses the proceeds from the cookbook to fund their many church, community, synod and global mission activities.
