10 years ago Excerpts from the March 11, 2004 Pioneer Journal • Hockey goes to state Sixteen years. State competition was a long time coming for the Wadena-Deer Creek boys hockey team, but they finally can lay some ghosts of hockey past to rest. They've been close before in Section 4A playoffs, but fell short of their dream of making it to state. The Wolverines hockey team had made it twice to the championship game of the section playoffs and lost both to Fergus Falls back in 1993-94 and 1999-2000.
I love spicy food, but my kids do not. This recipe for Hobo Hot Dish balances my need for heat with their mild tastes. It is really easy to make and so delicious. Hobo Hot Bake Makes eight servings • 2 pkgs. turkey kielbasa, sliced • 3 lbs. small red potatoes, halved • 1 lb. baby carrots • 1 large onion, sliced • 3 whole bay leaves • 3 teas. oregano • 2 Tbl. garlic, finely chopped • 3 teas. basil • 3 Tbl. olive oil • Sriracha hot sauce (optional) • Salt and pepper to taste
Last week, I took my daughter, niece and nephew to see 'Mr. Peabody and Sherman.' I thought the kids would enjoy it, even if I didn't. I was therefore surprised at how much I enjoyed this fun family film. The backstory of the film is that Mr. Peabody, a dog, was never adopted from the animal shelter and instead works hard to educate himself, becoming one of the smartest beings on Earth, and adopts Sherman as a baby when a judge says, "if a boy can adopt a dog, I see no reason why a dog can't adopt a boy."

According to Wadena County District Court records, Timothy Alan Sandberg, 46, became angry at a man at a family funeral who asked him to turn off his cell phone during the ceremony.

As most of you know, I have three African-American children through adoption. My ex-husband and I both grew up in liberal communities and our family has been blessed with very little racism in regards to our children. We have lived in communities where no one blinks an eye at seeing two white parents with three black children. Although it is rare, perhaps it is because of this that it is always so surprising to me when someone in makes a racist comment towards one of my kids. This is a relatively new experience for us since moving from Alaska to Minnesota.
Congratulations to Mark Johnson of Wadena, who correctly identified the location of the mystery photo as the cornerstone at the mausoleum at the Wadena cemetery. Mark won two $10 certificates...
