20 years ago Excerpts from the July 17, 1997 Pioneer Journal • Taste of Wadena includes special treats Fresh fruits and vegetables are closer to your kitchen than you think. The annual Farmer's Market is coming again to Burlington Northern Park next week. It's been informally dubbed "Taste of Wadena" and organizers are hoping to incorporate local service organizations as well. Beginning at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 24, local farmers and gardeners will have a variety of fruits and vegetables available as they come in season.
Another favorite recipe of mine that is a single serving is this recipe for Spicy Chicken Stir-Fry. I love spicy food and I especially love Asain - it reminds me of all the good food back home in Seattle, where I grew up. When I am really missing home, I whip up this and it takes me back. This recipe is ready to eat in 15 minutes and is so delicious and spicy. Enjoy! Spicy Chicken Stir-Fry Makes one serving • 1 tsp. Peanut oil • 1 boneless, skinless chicken breast half • 1 clove garlic • ½ jalapeno chile • 4 oz. snow peas
The old kennel ordinance in Wadena that has been around since the 1980's surrounding the number of dogs a resident can own is bringing out new emotions once again. It's a city ordinance that is complaint-driven, meaning if somebody has three or more dogs but nobody complains about the noise, they're allowed to keep all of the dogs. Authorities there have said they're not out there "headhunting"; however, if somebody complains of too much barking from a house that holds three dogs or more, the law is enforced.
There are many days when I am cooking for just me and more times than not, I make a sandwich or a light salad. When I want something different, this is my go-to recipe. The sweetness of the cranberries pairs very nicely with the savory flavors of the chicken and avocado. It is a healthy, quick meal that is perfect for those days when you want to feel special but don't want to slave away in the kitchen. Enjoy! Cranberry Chicken Avocado Bowls Makes one serving • ½ small avocado, diced • 4 oz. canned chicken • 1 Tbsp. dried cranberries

No agreement was reached in the St. Marie murder case and plans are being made to proceed with a trial. In a settlement conference July 12 at the Wadena County courthouse, attorneys for the state and the defendant came before Seventh Judicial District Judge Robert Raupp to inform him that they were unable to come to an agreement, which would have avoided a jury trial.
Independence Day might be over, but that doesn't mean you can't still have picnics with friends and family. I love a good potluck when I can relax with good company and lots of laughs. I also love good food - food that makes me smile. This recipe for Corn Salad fits the bill. It is fairly healthy and is bursting with flavor. It is perfect for a party. Enjoy! Corn Salad Makes four servings • 6 ears corn, husked and cleaned • 3 large tomatoes, diced • 1 large onion, diced • 1/4 c. chopped fresh basil • 1/4 c. olive oil
