Chronic Wasting Disease has been identified in a farmed deer herd near Merrifield, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health reported Friday. The herd of 33 mule deer and 100 white-tailed deer is registered with the Board of Animal Health. Two, 2-year-old female deer were slaughtered on the farm and both tested positive for CWD. The deer showed no clinical signs of illness.
A car started on fire on Highway 10 just west of Perham yesterday. Perham Fire Chief Mark Schmidt said there were no injuries in the incident. Eight local firefighters were called to the scene to extinguish the fire, working in frigid temperatures of well below zero.
A Perham man faces a felony charge of reckless discharge of a firearm after an incident Saturday afternoon, Dec. 31, at an apartment building in Perham. Police were dispatched to an apartment in Perham on a medical call Saturday afternoon, said Perham Police Chief Jason Hoaby. Hoaby said it was determined that an adult male in one of the apartments was struck by a bullet that accidentally fired by an adult male in an apartment directly above the victim's. Hoaby said Melvin Spooner, 24, was taken into custody after the incident.
Authorities have released the name of two people struck by a vehicle while walking on County Road 29 about 6 a.m. Christmas morning. Kitti Mclaughlin, 18, of Audubon, was pronounced dead at the scene. Mauricio Guerra, 24 of Frazee, remained in critical condition Sunday night. He was taken by ambulance to St. Mary's Essentia Hospital in Detroit Lakes and later transferred to a Fargo hospital with critical injuries. The accident occurred on Highway 29 about five miles north of Frazee, according to a report released by Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander.
Kris Wright Koll, 37, the New York Mills High School teacher accused of sexual contact with a minor, was charged Friday, Dec. 23, with felony criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree – position of authority, in Otter Tail County District Court. Criminal sexual contact could include kissing and fondling of either the complainant’s or the defendant’s “intimate parts.” (Minn. Stat. 609.345(e)).

A rollover crash on Highway 10 west of Perham left one person with serious injuries Wednesday, Dec. 28, the Minnesota State Patrol reported. A Ford pickup was eastbound on Highway 10 about 11:06 p.m. when it spun out, entered the median sideways, and rolled across the westbound lanes into the north ditch, the patrol reported. The driver, who was not identified, suffered serious injuries, the patrol reported. The report shared no information on where the driver was sent for treatment. The report listed road conditions as icy.
PERHAM, Minn.—A rural Perham man was injured Sunday, Dec. 25, when a fish house fire spread to nearby residences. According to a report released by the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office: Perham area fire crews and members of the sheriff's office were called about 6:30 a.m. Sunday to the rural Perham residence of Paul Krause, 62, where a fire in a fish house on dry land spread to nearby structures.

FRAZEE, Minn.—One person died and another was critically injured when a vehicle struck two pedestrians early Sunday, Dec. 25, on Highway 29 about five miles north of Frazee, according to a report released by Becker County Sheriff Todd Glander. According to the report: A vehicle driven by Alexis Birky, 20, of Frazee, was driving southbound on the highway about 6 a.m. Sunday, when her vehicle collided with two people who were walking in the southbound lane of the highway.
