Veteran outdoors media executive Erik Speer has been hired to be the general manager and publisher for Northland Outdoors, according to Forum Communications Co., which owns the brand and is headquartered in Fargo. Speer started on the job last week and comes to Northland Outdoors with more than 20 years of experience, most recently as production director for Outdoor Sportsman Group. There he was responsible for helping expand from two shows to what is now 15 television programs, including "In-Fisherman," "Bowhunter," "North American Whitetail" and "Guns & Ammo."
Forum Communications Co., or FCC, announced it is entering into an agreement to purchase the publications and a carrier delivery company owned by Helmer Printing. The deal was scheduled to close June 27. Helmer Printing is a third-generation, family-owned company based in Beldenville, Wis. Mark and Scott Helmer, along with sister Jenny, will continue to operate their commercial printing business.
A few heads were turned as a large sculpture was hauled along Interstate 94 earlier this week. Otter Tail County Metal Sculpture Artist, Ken Nyberg, has another piece of work "on the road." The Byron Minnesota Schools near Rochester commissioned Nyberg to make two Bear Cubs. It will match the mother Bear at the high school that Nyberg made years ago. The mascot for Byron is a bear. The Two Cub bears "on a log" were loaded up on a semi in Vining and hauled to Byron. The two bears are made of lawn mower blades.
A Park Rapids man is in the Becker County jail after allegedly assaulting a woman and then chasing a man, who tried to intervene, around with a hatchet. Wayne Lee Patton, 48, is charged with three felonies - assault with a dangerous weapon and two domestic assault charges.

An early morning traffic stop in Hubbard County on June 8 led to deputies locating one pound of methamphetamine in the trunk of a vehicle. Sean William Curtis, 46, of Bemidji, faces three felony controlled substance charges in Hubbard County District Court. According to court documents, just before 1 a.m. on June 8 a Hubbard County deputy patrolling Highway 200 in Hendrickson Township pulled a vehicle over for driving 74 mph in a 55 mph zone.
The propane truck driver who authorities say caused the train crash and derailment in Callaway north of Detroit Lakes two months ago is being charged in the incident. According to the complaint filed in Becker County District Court, Biya Abdella Buta, 31, of Mandan, N.D., is being summoned to appear on three charges. He faces one count of criminal vehicular operation leading to bodily harm for "operating a motor vehicle in a grossly negligent manner, causing bodily harm to another." If convicted of the gross misdemeanor, he faces up to one year in jail and/or a $3,000 fine.
Road construction season is starting early in Minnesota this year and, no different than in recent years, without the funds needed to meet all of the needs. The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced 246 state road and bridge projects for the 2016 construction season at a news conference and webcast Thursday with Lt. Gov. Tina Smith and Transportation Commissioner Charlie Zelle. The statewide construction plans for 2016 total $1.04 billion.
