The defense team for the St. Anthony police officer charged in the fatal shooting of Philando Castile is making another attempt to have his trial moved outside the Twin Cities. Defense attorneys have suggested moving the trial to Brainerd or Duluth.
ALEXANDRIA, Minn. -- A 12-year-old girl died Friday in an apparent drowning in a swampy area between two lakes near here. JaLysa Anne Cook of Alexandria was found in about 3 feet of water about 6:10 p.m, according to authorities.
The death of a 3-year-old Park Rapids girl last week is under investigation. Hubbard County Sheriff Cory Aukes did not release the name of the child or any other information related to the death. County Attorney Jonathan Frieden said he could only confirm that a 3-year-old child from Hubbard County died on April 20, and state law requires authorities to investigate the matter.
Miltona man in Otter Tail County jail, charged with stealing pickup, fleeing officers A 25-year-old Miltona man is being held at the Otter Tail County Jail on charges of fleeing a peace officer in a stolen motor vehicle at speeds of up to 95 mph. According to the Independent News Herald in Clarissa, citing information from the Otter Tail County Sheriff's Office, Tyler Scott Schmidtbauer was arrested after leading officers on a 20-mile pursuit in a stolen vehicle.
State Rep. John Lesch, a veteran lawmaker from St. Paul, is launching a bid for Minnesota attorney general. A longtime prosecutor for the city of St. Paul, Lesch was first elected to the Minnesota House in 2002. After an unofficial trip to Iraq in 2006, Lesch enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard in 2009, when he was in his late 30s.
BRAINERD, Minn. -- The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office has listed the provisional manner and cause of death of a Brainerd man missing since the fall of 2014 as undetermined, Brainerd Police Chief Corky McQuiston stated Tuesday in an email. The body of Mark Weizant was found March 25 on private property not far from the Mississippi River in a undeveloped wooded area about two miles south and west from where he was last seen in Brainerd.

Alexandria man faces counterfeit money charges An Alexandria man was arrested in Benton County after a routine traffic stop and is facing charges of possessing counterfeit currency. According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, James Earl Meyer, 53, attempted to use a counterfeit $100 bill at Hardware Hank in Rice about 6:35 p.m. on Tuesday, March 7.
