It was a transaction almost 90 years in the making - Karvonen's, the furniture store on Main Street in Perham, has been purchased by Aaron Karvonen from John Karvonen, making the transition to a fourth generation of family ownership. Karvonen's was founded in October of 1926 by Yalmer Karvonen.
A new option is available in the area for caregivers of adults who need supervision. The Adult Day Services Program at Perham Living opened on March 30 as part of the health campus's service offerings. "We started seeing a need for it with different clients who we work with out in the community," said Katie Lundmark, vice president of long-term care, of the program.
The Perham-Dent School District's first attempt to pass a bond referendum failed on May 12. Voters were asked to vote "Yes" or "No" on whether the district should be able to borrow $58.3 million to complete building projects including: a new high school for grades 9-12, a new preschool addition, expansion of classrooms at Heart of the Lakes Elementary School and renovations in Prairie Wind Middle School. As of May 7, there were 6,513 people who were registered to vote in the Perham-Dent School District.
Ice is a normal part of winter along Minnesota's lakes. However, this year, some property owners on Otter Tail County lakes are dealing with more ice, and damage, than usual. Dave Sethre, president of the Otter Tail County Coalition of Lake Associations, called the ice on one of the biggest lakes -- Otter Tail -- "pretty radical" this year. "This is turning out to be the winter of the ice heave on many of our larger Otter Tail County lakes," Sethre wrote in a March newsletter.

Perham's Barrel O' Fun Snack Foods (a KLN Family Brands company) has been fined $45,000 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
PERHAM, Minn. - What started 17 years ago as a challenge amongst brothers has led a Perham man to become a serious contender in sporting competitions around the state and beyond. It was 1997 when one of Jerry Huebsch's six brothers decided all seven of them should try running in Lake Country Gardens' Otter Tail Lake Chase. "Well, I hadn't run in 20 years, and I thought it would be a piece of cake," Jerry said of the two-mile event. It wasn't. "That was a wakeup call. I came in last among all my brothers, and I was sore for three or four days afterwards," said Jerry.
KLN Family Brands is partnering with a national education program to bring more than 60 interns from abroad to work and learn at Barrel O'Fun. Since 1985, Communicating for Agriculture Education Programs (CAEP) has arranged for 20,000 interns from 50 different countries to travel to the U.S., where they gain professional experience in agricultural areas such as agribusiness, dairy farming, horsemanship, greenhouses and turf management. This will be the first time a KLN property has been involved in the program. Interns will be coming to Perham as soon as mid-April.
Fire crews battled a large blaze Tuesday night at an R.D. Offutt Co. potato warehouse near Perham. A Perham police officer on the scene said the fire was called in at about 4:20 p.m. Witnesses said the fire originated in the south part of the building and spread north. At least two semi trucks were seen inside the building, engulfed in flames. An unknown amount of potatoes and other contents were also inside.
