When I was a teenager, I worked the counter of the NAPA Auto Parts store in Oakes, N.D. I'll never forget one quiet mid-summer afternoon, when I was focusing my energies on cleaning up around the store and some interesting tunes came flowing out of the radio speakers perched on the building's walls. In a temporary state of confusion, I perked my ears to make sure that I was actually hearing what I thought I was hearing. The DJ was playing Christmas music when the temperature outside was close to 80 degrees. These days, people can't seem to start thinking about Christmas soon enough.
All was quiet around Verndale's Family Life Church building Tuesday. The only movement in the area came from an American flag perched near the building's front door. It swayed slowly in the calm afternoon breeze. On a normal day at the church, there might have been a number of youth activities taking place or congressional members meeting up for prayer or church meetings.

One of the best Thanksgiving memories I have was when my family traveled from North Dakota to my grandparents' home in Bella Vista, Ark. when I was a kid. We arrived at grandma and grandpa's house after the long car ride and flooded through their door with a heavy collection of overnight bags, holiday foods and Christmas presents, which were to be handed out early since the Sullivan side of the family could only manage to get everyone together once a year.
Melvin Smith doesn't dwell much on the fact he nearly died from malaria in a tent hospital bed during World War II. He also doesn't seem to mind the partial deafness he suffers from because of his days spent feeding heavy ammunition into screaming guns used to take down war planes. These days, the 93-year-old Wadena man is much quicker to chat about golf, card games or the 1,200 mint baseball caps he has collected throughout the years and stored in his daughter's garage.
A driver was cited for having an open alcoholic beverage and drug paraphernalia in his vehicle, after it was reported he and another man had been discharging a firearm, according to a report from the Todd County Sheriff's Office. Julius Stone, 22, of Clarissa was driving the vehicle at around 7:21 p.m. Tuesday on 380th Street in Wykeham Township., and was later cited for the open bottle and drug paraphernalia, the report said.
