Michael Behl chalked up five goals and two assists Tuesday night as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines hammered Bagley/Fosston 8-2. The victory evened WDC's record a 1-1 after they suffered a 6-5 overtime loss to Ely in their season opener. The Wolverines put the game's first six goals on the scoreboard with Behl scoring four of them. Dylan Phillips scored WDC's first goal of the second period.
Certified Public Accountant Mary Backlund of Schlenner Wenner and Company of St. Cloud issued a clean opinion of District 2155's financial statements last Monday at the November meeting of the school board. The "clean" opinion was exactly what Wadena-Deer Creek superintendent Lee Westrum was looking for from the school's audit. "That is what you always want to hear from your auditors," Westrum said.
Wadena-Deer Creek will not have to go looking for a new girls' hockey co-operative next season after the WDC school board took action last Monday night in Robertson Theatre. The board approved a proposal to drop Staples-Motley from the co-op and add Sauk Centre for the 2015-2016 season. Sauk Centre has both a hockey facility and a team.
The Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder used 30 Wadena-Deer Creek turnovers and scoring by 10 players to overpower the Wolverines 63-31 Tuesday night in Wadena. The Thunder put the game away in the first half with a 42-14 scoring blitz. "This was another game where we just did not take care of the ball well enough to stay in the game," WDC head coach Jason Mielke said. "We had several young -players who are working hard to adjust to the speed and aggressiveness of varsity basketball.
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 160-pound wrestler Ethan Kimber was an individual champion at 160 Saturday in the Dennis Kaatz Invitational at Wadena-Deer Creek middle/high school. Kimber met Nick Gravdahl of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus in the finals and posted a 5-3 decision. Kimber wrestled his way to the finals by defeating Thief River Falls' Noah Hawkins on a fall at 1:29 and pinning Staples-Motley's Jeremy Miller in 1:36. Perham had five wrestlers claim championships as they ran away with the invitational title with 241 points.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railways expected to have both tracks open by Thursday after a derailment of 32 train cars at 6:32 a.m. Monday four miles northwest of Wadena. An army of workers and heavy equipment was on site Tuesday morning, one-half mile southeast of Bluffton, clearing debris and replacing track. A train stood by outside Wadena Tuesday morning with a load of crushed rock ready to replace the railroad bed. BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth said the estimate for the first track to be reopened was 10 a.m.

A Wadena-Deer Creek boys' basketball team that is replacing five starters found themselves in deep waters Friday night when they took on perennial Heart O' Lakes contender Pelican Rapids. The Wolverines were held to 16 first half points in losing an 82-53 season-opening decision to the Vikings, who are coached this year for the first time by John Gullingsrud. The Vikings scored 42 first half points against the WDC defense.
