Indoor ice has been on the mind of many people in the Wadena community since last June when an EF4 tornado distributed pieces of the arena all over the west side of town. Monday night, the District 2155 school board approved a motion to provide the Wadena-Deer Creek and Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek hockey teams with transportation for the 2010-11 school year. The motion comes just one week after the Wadena City Council unanimously approved a plan by the Wadena Hockey Association and the Wadena Community Center to put an inflatable tent over the existing community center ice rink
Emma Schmitz finished 13th and Neil Janson placed 18th Monday in the Park Rapids Invitational at Headwaters Golf Course. Schmitz ran a 15:48 in the girls' varsity race. Teammate Evelyn Kumano placed 86th with a time of 23:17. Lake of the Woods' Victoria Alexander won the race with a 14:42. Park Rapids' Lydia Lutz was nine seconds off the winning pace with a 14:53.00. Perham's Cassie Beseman placed third with a 15:21 and paced her Yellowjackets to a team victory. Neil Janson paced the WDC boys' team with a time of 18:06.31. Joey Pate was 17 places behind Janson with a time of 18:42.25.
Ashley Richter exploded for 19 kills and 17 digs as the Verndale Pirates closed their regular season slate by defeating Menagha 3-1. The Pirates posted an 8-16 record in regular season play. They enter Section 5A tournament play next. The Pirates lost the opener to the Braves 25-23 but dominated the rest of the way winning 25-16, 25-16, 25-10. Kaitlyn Richter dished out 18 set assists while Elizabeth Johnson had 15.
The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines wrapped up their 2010 regular season with a perfect 26-0 record Tuesday by sweeping Section 8AA foe Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton 3-0. The second-ranked Wolverines posted wins of 25-18, 25-19, 25-10 in a match that might be a preview to the upcoming Section 8AA finals. The Wolverines have the best record in the south half of Section 8AA. The sixth-ranked Rebels are No. 1 in the north half. The Section 8AA tournament begins Oct. 28. Courtney Volkmann had 30 set assists and eight ace serves in Tuesday's match.
Zack Meidinger scored his first two touchdowns of the year Wednesday night as the Verndale Pirates trounced Lincoln High 38-6 in the regular season finale for both clubs. The victory snapped a string of five straight losses by the defending Section 4, Class Nine-man champions. Meidinger, who was one of Verndale's best rushing threats last year, sprained an ankle Oct. 8 in a game with Underwood.
The eighth-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines will travel to No. 1 Breckenridge at 6 p.m. Tuesday as the Section 6AA football playoffs. Other first round games will see No. 4 Crosby-Ironton hosting No. 5 Holdingford, No, 3 Otter Tail Central hosting No. 6 West Central Area and No. 2 Pierz hosting No. 7 Osakis. Semifinal round action is set for Saturday at the home of the highest remaining seeds. The Section 6A finals are slated for 5:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Fargodome.

Second round action will be held Friday at the highest seed. The sub-section finals are set Thursday, Nov. 4.
