Three Wadena-Deer Creek golfers claimed all-conference honors Monday in the Mid-Minnesota Conference tournament at Whitetail Run. WDC's Michael Wing, Tyler Fix and Bryan Silvers earned all-conference status with rounds of 81, 85 and 87 on their home course. The Wolverines also saw Nick LeTourneau fire a 96, Duke Harrison card a 103 and Tyler Heinzen record a 106.
Wadena-Deer Creek's Kayla Krause recorded an 88 Tuesday in the Detroit Lakes Invitational. The Wolverines placed 10th in the invite with a 392.
Wadena-Deer Creek's Mike Paavola and Taylor Garcia reached the second round of Section 8A doubles play Tuesday by defeating Scott Metzger and Shane Wasylow of East Grand Forks 6-2, 6-3. Zach Norenberg and Kevin Jensen were ousted from doubles play by losing to Thief River Falls' Logan Engelstad and Micah Rodahl 6-0, 6-0. Section 8A singles play saw Staples-Motley's Jordan Peterson blanking WDC's Drew Larson 6-0, 6-0. Alex Renner of Park Rapids eliminated Austin Korkowski 6-1, 6-0. Team play saw the second-seeded Detroit Lakes Lakers stopping the seventh-seeded Wolverines 7-0.
Kim Narveson went 2-for-2 and drove in a pair of runs Tuesday as the seventh-ranked Pequot Lakes Patriots upset the second-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 4-2 in the first round of the Sub-Section 8AA fast pitch tournament. Narveson and teammate Megan Hogen both laced triples in the victory on the Wadena softball field. Leah Dykhoff reached twice for the Wolverines on bunt singles. Kelly DeFoe was hung with the loss while Kayla Wangen gained the victory.
Dan Johnson's Verndale Pirates clubbed Brandon-Evansville 8-1 Tuesday before losing to Bertha-Hewitt 4-3 in Sub-Section 6A softball action. The Pirates pushed seven runs across the plate in the first four innings. Jenny Swenson silenced the Brandon-Evansville bats for five frames. Elizabeth Johnson and Heather Hejhal each scored twice for the Pirates. Swenson walked one and fanned three in five innings of work.
Kyle Dykhoff is seeing a lot of hard work paying off as his Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines head into the Section 8AA tournament. The Wolverines played two of their strongest games of the season Tuesday as they swept Pequot Lakes 5-1 and 3-1 in a Mid-State Conference twinbill. "Our pitching and defense was outstanding in both games," Dykhoff said. "I'm really proud of the guys for fighting down the stretch to win five of seven." The Wolverines ended the week with a 9-8 record overall. Last year's club ended the season with a 5-14 record.
