When the Minnesota Vikings drafted Randy Moss in 1998 it was a daring but risky move. Now their season suddenly depends on how well their former wideout can play at the age of 33. Moss wore the nickname of "The Freak" when he came out of Marshall because of his uncanny pass-catching abilities. He defied the squeaky clean image that Minnesotans want their football heroes to have. Draft analysts at the time were wondering if then-head coach Dennis Green had snapped his cap. Minnesota fans loved Moss in his rookie season and for seven years the Vikings put up with his out-spoken manner.
The cards continued to run cold for Mike Mahlen and his Verndale Pirates Friday night as they lost a 10-6 decision to Eagle Valley in their Homecoming game. The Pirates were held to just one touchdown by the Rebels as their offensive problems continued to mount with the loss of Jerdan Stinar. The tight end-defensive end sprained his ankle in the first half. Already hamstrung by the loss of some key backfield people, the Pirates picked up only 14 yards through the air and were out-gained by the Rebels 226-168. The loss was the third straight for Verndale.
Wednesday was a big day in the history of Wadena-Deer Creek School District as board chairwoman Ann Pate signed a settlement resolution with Riverport Insurance Services in the office of Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson. The $40,861,324 settlement has been four months in the making after a June 17 tornado left the Wadena-Deer Creek Senior and Junior High in ruins. Engineering reports indicated the 45-year-old school was more than 90 percent destroyed by the EF-4 tornado.

Wadena mayor Wayne Wolden and Wadena-Deer Creek superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom display the "Shooting Star" baseball quilt made by wives of the American League Central champion Minnesota Twins at Monday night's school board meeting in the Memorial Auditorium. Perkins + Will, the district's architectural firm, purchased the quilt for $6,010 in an auction by the Twins. The Twins wives sweetened that amount to $10,000. The fundraising project is intended to help the city of Wadena rebuild its youth baseball facilities.
