The Verndale School Board got the good news and the bad news in straight doses Monday night at its April meeting. Thanks to the lobbying efforts of St. Anthony Village, a school in a metro community with high property values that does not qualify for referendum aid, the Verndale district had gained $111,000 in state aid since last July because it does not have an operating levy. Verndale is one of only a handful of districts in the state to have this distinction.
Justin Sperling was promoted to the position of K-8 principal and district assessment coordinator Monday night at the April meeting of the District 818 School Board. Sperling, who has held the job of dean of students in Verndale during the 2009-10 school year, will step into his new position July 1. In other personnel moves, the board granted tenure to Kali Matthiesen (elementary education, 5-8 science), Sara Ross (elementary education K-6, birth-grade 3), Gena Sperling (elementary education K-6) and Shalom Ziegler (5-12 health/K-12 physical education, adaptive physical education). Developing critical thinkers through educational excellence will be part of a new mission and vision statement for District 818 in Verndale. The District 818 school board recently held a retreat to come up with a new statement. The board is also planning to keep the statement which has been guiding the school. Verndale's administration will be working with the teaching staff to decide which plan will be used as the mission statement and which will be used as the vision statement. Verndale school officials hope that the process will be finalized by June 30.
