McKenna Brand had a hat trick and Bailey Moore stopped 14 shots Tuesday night as Park Rapids whipped Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek 8-0 for a regular season sweep. The Blue Devils matched the Panthers shot-for-shot in the first period but Park Rapids took a 2-0 lead on goals by Brand and Hannah Williams. It was all Park Rapids in the second period as the Panthers out-shot the Blue Devils 14-5 and out-scored them 5-0. The Panthers were in complete charge of the puck by the third period and out-shot the Blue Devils 13-2. Six different players contributed goals for the Panthers. J
Jana Anderson pumped in 25 points as the Crosby-Ironton Rangers parlayed a fast start into a 65-54 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek. The Rangers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and took a 32-19 lead at the half. "We just couldn't find a way to slow them down or answer back," WDC head coach Keith Ferris said. "Every time we would make a run they would continue to hit tough shots on their end." Emily Miron recorded another double-double for the Wolverines with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Courtney Volkmann tacked up 13 points. The Wolverines lost for just the second time in 11 games.
The Verndale Pirates ran out of gas in the second half Friday night in a 58-33 Park Region Conference loss at Sebeka. "I thought we played one of our better games this year," Verndale head coach Art Schluttner said. "I thought our girls played extremely well and showed up ready to play." The Pirates scored just 14 points against the Sebeka defense in the second half and finished the game shooting 31 percent from the floor. Alicia Boe and Jessica Lillquist led the Trojans with 17 points. Katie Huttunen canned 10.
Chris Haugdahl came up with 16 points and Jacob Smith gunned in 13 Friday as Henning Hornets handed Verndale a 53-41 loss in Park Region Conference play. Kyle Booth canned 11 points for the Pirates and Dustin Motschenbacher added nine. The Pirates were playing their second straight game without their top scorer, Zack Meidinger. HENNING (53) A. Lauren Norgren's hat trick paced the Fergus Falls Otters in a 6-0 win over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Tuesday night at the Expo Arena in Long Prairie. Aimee Magnusson, Madi Hershner and Sydney Kuehl also iced goals for the Otters. The Otters out-shot the Blue Devils 59-6. Robbinsdale Cooper 4, LPGE/WDC 1 Kelly Sandhofer held the Blue Devils scoreless for the final two periods Dec. 29 helping Robbinsdale Cooper to earn a Schwan Cup Green Division win. Kaitlyn Miller gave Cooper a 1-0 lead in the first period with an unassisted goal.
Teresa Moenkedick scored 18 points and Kaitlin Richter grabbed 10 rebounds Tuesday as the Verndale Pirates clipped Browerville 57-50 on the Verndale court. Elizabeth Johnson came up with 10 point in the victory which was Verndale's first since Dec. 16. Art Schluttner's team improved to 3-6 on the season. The Wadena Boxing Club will have 10 fighters featured on a Jan. 15 card at the Wadena Armory. The 7:30 p.m. card will have 12 fights. Joining Wadena will be teams from White Earth, Willmar, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth and Minneapolis. Seeing action for Wadena will be DeWayne Steward (165). Tom VanErp's Wadena-Deer Creek cagers left their best basketball at home Dec. 29 as they fell to the Fergus Falls Otters 43-33 in the Otter Holiday Classic. "We didn't play with a lot of energy for most of the game," VanErp said. "We missed many easy shots, especially early in the game." The Wolverines were rusty after a 12-day layoff. They connected on only one of their 13 three-point shots on the new Kennedy Secondary court and made just 11 of their 47 field goal shots for a 23.4 percent clip.
