A flock of 2011 school buses have made a timely landing in Wadena. Eight 77-passenger Internationals and two 14-passenger Chevrolets are on the line and awaiting their drivers for the 2010-2011 school year. Wadena-Deer Creek transportation director Tim Wohlert will have 20 buses in his charge by the time the school year begins. The 10 new buses are all leased from Hoglund Bus and Truck of Monticello.
For a man who has been a fixture in Wadena for the last 50 years, Bob Tubandt had an unusual beginning. For the first 17 years of his life, Tubandt was a farm kid -- and that meant he grew up working. Tubandt watched his parents rise early to do farm chores, then head for their day jobs in town before returning in the evening to do more chores.

The 2010 season promises to deliver some strong individual performances by Wadena-Deer Creek's cross country team. Junior Neil Janson has been running for the Wolverines since the seventh grade and the junior harrier is now entering a phase where most runners deliver on their promise. "Neil has improved every year," WDC head coach Terry Olson said. "He definitely has the most speed and talent of all our runners and he works hard." Olson sees Janson emerging as the team's No. 1 varsity threat. Freshman Will Eliason has a good chance to be the club's No.
Paige Hartman's victory at No. 3 singles broke up a shutout bid by the Pierz Pioneers Wednesday on the revamped Wadena-Deer Creek courts. Hartman defeated Emily Seelen 6-3, 6-3. The WDC courts were badly damaged in the June 17 tornado but were recently repaired. The Wolverines will host Park Rapids in a 4:30 p.m. contest Tuesday and will entertain Detroit Lakes at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Pierz 6, WDC 1 Singles 1- Cassie Banick (P) def.
