Four Eagle Valley players scored in double figures as the Rebels held off a second half comeback by Verndale to post a 69-65 West Sub-Section 5A playoff win Monday night in Clarissa. Playing for the second straight time in just three days, the Rebels won the first half 39-28 but the Pirates rallied to out-score them 37-30 in the second half. Luke Mock led the Eagle Valley scoring attack with 18 points. Verndale senior Zack Meidinger made his last appearance on a high school hardcourt a memorable one with 33 points.
Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale's Colin Turchin finished in the top four and three Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers racked up two matches apiece Friday and Saturday at the Class A Individual Wrestling Tournament. Turchin, who entered his third straight state tournament as the No. 2-ranked heavyweight in Class A, wrestled five times and finished up in the third-place match with Minneota's Josh Van Overbecke. The Detroit Lakes Lakers topped the 90-point mark for the second time this season Tuesday night in racking up a 92-53 Mid-State Conference victory over Wadena-Deer Creek. Eleven players scored points for the Lakers with five of them hitting double figures. Brian Labat was high point man with 15. Kirk McLeod, Joe Mollberg and Josh Stalberger tied with 13 apiece. Connor McLeod chipped in with 12. "We never really got going in this game," WDC head coach Tom VanErp said.
Three Wadena-Deer Creek wrestlers claimed runner-up honors in the Section 6A Individual Wrestling Tournament Saturday in Barrett. Seniors Jared Wegscheid (140) and Dylan Anderson (285) were joined in qualifying for the Class A state tournament by sophomore Tony Reurink (215). Wegscheid and Reurink both had to withstand True Second challenges.
