The 2010 Minnesota Legislative session looks like an old-time cliffhanger to Wadena-Deer Creek superintendent Virginia Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom and her staff have been running District 2155 on $2 million worth of borrowed money for the last several months. "They typically won't touch K-12 education until the very end and then they are going to have to balance the budget on K-12 education," Dahlstrom said. The state has to come up with $3 billion to balance the budget by Monday, May 17, or return for a special session.
Fishermen anxious to fill their live wells with those slippery green walleyes may be in for a pleasant surprise this spring. The wet weather period was due to end by Friday and a week of sunny weather and warmer temperatures is being forecast. Already a bit euphoric over the early ice-out and a pleasant April, Minnesota anglers will be dropping their boats into thousands of northern Minnesota lakes this weekend for the 2010 walleye-northern opener. The cool, wet weather that arrived April 24 and settled in for a three-week stay is supposed to be departing and some very decent spring tempera
Travis George went 4-for-4 at the plate and had three doubles as the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers opened their 2010 season Saturday with a 10-0 Hi-Ten Conference victory over the Dent Bulldogs. Jamie Nordlund and J.J. Truax combined with George for eight of the 11 hits which the Shockers collected off Dent pitching. Nordlund and George had first inning RBIs as the Shockers built a quick 3-0 lead in the seven-inning contest. George also started on the hill for the Shockers and held the Bulldogs to just two hits over the first five innings.

Craig Klawitter's Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines survived two good innings by New York Mills Monday to claim a 6-5 fastpitch victory over the Eagles. Steph Hahn was touched for six hits and five runs but the right-hander gave her team a complete game. Hahn did not walk a single batter and struck out eight to gain the victory. Mills' Kendra McCall walked five and fanned five in the loss. The Eagles bunched their runs scoring two in the third and three more in the fifth. Leah Dykhofff went 2-for-2 at the plate for WDC, scored three times and stole a base.
