Caitlin Volkmann hit four treys on an 18-point scoring night and Emily Miron came up with a double-double as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines topped the state-ranked Pelican Rapids 62-57 in their final game before the Christmas break. The Vikings entered Tuesday's tilt ranked No. 9 in the Class AA state basketball poll. "Pelican is a very good team," WDC Head Coach Keith Ferris said in praising the Vikings. "The win was definitely a team effort. It was nice to see the girls come together in a tight game." Miron netted 14 points and collected 11 rebounds in the post.
Ryan Redfield continued to find the WDC court to be a good shooting site Friday in the Wolverines defeated Staples-Motley 54-50 Friday for their first Mid-State Conference win of the season. Redfield, who scored hit six treys and scored 23 points in WDC's home opener with Pine River-Backus, led the Wolverines again scoring 20 points, including nine off three-pointers. "He had a great week," WDC Head Coach Tom VanErp said. "He shot the ball really well. It was good to see him get on track.

Four players scored in double figures as the Eagle Valley Rebels topped the Verndale Pirates 65-57 for third place honors in the Parkers Prairie tournament. Tate Benning led the Rebels with 14 points while Luck Mock netted 13, Jero Nelson pumped in 12 and Tyler Oftedahl scored 10. Wadena's Jeremy Umland, Fikret Saric and Mark Niemela posted victories on a seven-fight CFX card Saturday in Alexandria. Umland defeated Jordan Barrett with a guillotine choke at the 31-second mark in Round 1 to improve his record to 2-0. Fikret defeated Brad Hofstrand by submission when a shoulder injury forced Hofstrand to give up the fight at the 49 second mark of the first round. The victory gave Saric a 5-4 record. Connor Chambers tacked up four goals and four assists Tuesday as the Northern Lakes Lightning skated past Wadena-Deer Creek 9-5. Kegan Couture had a hat trick for the Lightning and Andy Sorben turned in four assists. Mitchell Swanson iced a pair of goals for the Wolverines while Bridger Pettit added a goal and two assists. Christian Berg and Mike Paavola also scored for WDC. Wesley Janson kicked out 26 shots for the Wolverines who out-shot the Lightning 42-35. STEM instructor Mike Shrode briefed the District 2155 School Board on a plan Monday night to apply for a Project Lead The Way grant for Wadena-Deer Creek. Shrode was hired by the board last summer to start a STEM program for WDC. STEM combines science, technology, engineering and math skills in the completion of assigned class room projects. If District 2155 receives the award, Shrode will be looking at roughly $55,000 in start-up money to begin an STEM-based, industry-created, engineering curriculum for grades 6-12.
The Wadena-Deer Creek School Board approved the maximum local levy amount of $1,581,805.87 at its December meeting Monday night at the WDC Elementary Media Center. The local levy is expected to generate $8,577,049.95 in 2011-12 federal and state aid. The local levy amount is a 3.12 percent increase over last year's $1,533,933.33 ($47,812.44). WDC's local levy amount has swung between a low of $583,229.58 and a high of $1,737,677.32 over the last 13 years. The board also approved Perkins+Will and Kraus-Anderson storm shelter contracts in the amounts of $112,550 and $959,461 respectively.
Four first period goals carried the Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek Blue Devils past Morris/Benson Area 6-2 Tuesday for their first victory in five decisions. Katelyn Barthel scored twice for the Blue Devils. Morgan Zeise iced the game's first goal. Ashley Helseth and Kat Benney scored their first varsity goals. Katelyn Peters scored the team's final goal.
Justin Gordan, Dillon Card and Colin Turchin claimed individual championships Saturday as the Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale Raiders took fourth in the eight-team Barnesville Invitational. Gordan pinned Barnesville's Zach Anderson at the 2:23 mark of their 106-pound match. Card won by fall over Barnesville's Josh Harris at the 5:17 mark.
