Virginia Dahlstrom, superintendent for Wadena-Deer Creek Middle/High School, throws her fist in the air in the WDC gymnasium Wednesday evening as she welcomes community members to the dedication ceremony of the new school building. On June 17, 2010, a tornado moved through Wadena and destroyed the old school. Two years later, the community is celebrating the opening of a new facility.

Wadena Mayor Wayne Wolden shows some of the souvenirs he brought back from his visit to Wadena, Saskatchewan. Wolden made the trip because the Canadian town invited mayors from other towns named Wadena to its 100th community anniversary. Wadena, Minn. and Wadena, Saskatchewan are about 650 miles apart.

The former Leaf River Ag Service building in Wadena started coming down Tuesday morning. Doing the demolition work is Forest River Salvage of Fordville, N.D. The building was badly damaged by the tornado that hit Wadena in June, 2010.

Interactive white boards, or SMART boards, were recently installed in classrooms at the new WDC School. A SMART board lets teachers deliver dynamic lessons, write notes in digital ink and save their work, all with the touch of a finger. Pictured above is a SMART board installed in the computer lab on second floor of the academic wing.
