Eleven members from Wadena-Deer Creek's Business Professionals of America (BPA) chapter participated in the regional competition held Jan. 23 in Detroit Lakes. Seven qualified for state. Kali Matthieson's class celebrates "Belly Laugh Day" with smiley faces Jan. 23 in the Wadena-Deer Creek Elementary Media Center. Loni Niles, media center specialist (pictured in the back smiling), said WDC decided to celebrate this lighthearted day to chase away the winter blues. Students celebrate 'Belly Laugh Day'

Wadena-Deer Creek Drama Director Jay Patterson and the One-Act Play cast/crew took first place Jan. 26 at the Subsection 22 competition. Seven schools competed on at Wadena Memorial Auditorium, with the top two schools advancing to the sectional contest in Park Rapids, set for Saturday. Eagle Valley Schools earned a second-place finish with "Stone Soup" and will also advance. Multiple patrons eagerly gather around an iPad Wednesday evening at the new Wadena-Deer Creek Middle/High School, following the building's dedication ceremony. Students attending the new school will be able to use iPads this year, rather than using certain books.

Virginia Dahlstrom, superintendent for Wadena-Deer Creek Middle/High School, throws her fist in the air in the WDC gymnasium Wednesday evening as she welcomes community members to the dedication ceremony of the new school building. On June 17, 2010, a tornado moved through Wadena and destroyed the old school. Two years later, the community is celebrating the opening of a new facility.

Jim Formanek, former Wadena-Deer Creek art teacher, shows a music-themed mural Monday in the upstairs of The Uptown, where he has been storing it and other student artwork from the 1990s and 2000s. The art was salvaged after a June 17, 2010 tornado destroyed the old WDC school.
