Runs aplenty for Wadena-DC in doubleheader sweep

After the 8-3 loss to Perham, Wadena-Deer Creek head coach Tracy Jack hoped her softball team would get off to faster starts. The Wolverines made that wish come true when they earned a doubleheader sweep of Ottertail Central, 4-1 and 27-20, on May 1 in Battle Lake.

The Wolverines scored runs in the first inning both games, helping them build early leads against the Bulldogs.

In game one, Wadena-DC scored a run in the first, added another in the fourth and closed it out with two in the seventh. Mackenzie Carsten picked up the win on the mound. She allowed one run on three hits. She fanned four batters and walked six.

Kyla Ness and Laura Krause had two hits each in the game one win. Courtny Warren had a hit and knocked in two runs, while Alex Kahl added a hit and drove in a run as well. Wadena-DC took advantage of five walks, picking up the victory.

The second game featured a ton of offense for both teams. The teams combined to score 47 runs on 37 hits. The Wolverines capitalized on 11 walks.

All nine Wadena-DC batters had hits and seven of them had multiple hits in the victory. Lila Lohmiller paced the Wolverines with four hits, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Amber Moen finished with three hits and four runs batted in. Casey Volkmann added two hits and four runs batted in and scored five times. Kate Schmidt had three hits and five runs batted in as well. Courtny Warren and Carsten each drove in two runs in the win.

The Wolverines improved their season mark to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the Park Region Conference. The Wolverines are home on Thursday for a double dip with Parkers Prairie, starting at 4 p.m.
