Wadena-DC rolls Ely, moves to 3-0-0

The Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines moved to 3-0-0 for the first time since the 2003-04 season when they walloped the Ely Timberwolves 12-5 in a non-conference boys hockey game on Dec. 2 at the Wadena Ice Arena.

The Wolverines received goals from seven different players in the win with Preston Warren leading the output with three goals and three assists. Colby Schertler, Jake Dykhoff and Justin Dykhoff added two goals each in the lopsided home win. The Wolverines have showed the ability to bury the puck in their first three games, averaging eight goals a game during the earlier part of the season.

The Wolverines scored five first period goals and four second period goals in building a commanding lead on the Timberwolves and added three more for the runaway victory.

Jake Dykhoff scored twice in the first period, while Jackson Becker, Dylan Ness and Max Phillips found the net as well.

After building a 5-2 lead in the first, Justin Dykhoff expanded it with a power play goal, making it 6-2.

Ely struck for a pair of goals, cutting the lead to 6-4, but the Wolverines had too much firepower for the visiting Timberwolves. Schertler scored twice in the second and Warren added another, giving the Wolverines a 9-5 lead after two. Warren added two more in the third period, while Justin Dykhoff added another, closing out the scoring.

The Wolverines had success on the power play, scoring four times in 10 tries. They kept the Timberwolves off the board in their five attempts. Noah Stevens stopped 24 of 29 shots, while Chase Sandberg made 28 saves on 37 shots before being relieved. Tyler House finished with nine saves on 12 shots.
