Wolverines open with road victory

The Scott Woods era began with a convincing win for the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines when they spoiled the 2017-18 home opener for the Breckenridge/Wahpeton Blades on Nov. 28 in Wahpeton.

Jake Dykhoff recorded the hat-trick, while Max Phillips found the net twice in the 7-2 victory for the Wolverines. Phillips found the twine twice, but also handed out three helpers in the win, finishing with a team high of five points.

The offensive outburst was more than enough for Noah Stevens in the net. Stevens finished with 24 saves on 26 shots to record the victory.

The Wolverines broke the game open with a three-goal second period and put the Blades away with a pair of goals in the third period.

The Wolverines peppered Breckenridge/Wahpeton’s Hunter Wamre with 39 shots. He was able to kick aside 32 of them in the loss.

The special teams turned in a solid night as well, killing all six power play opportunities for the Blades, while adding a late power play goal in the third period.

The Wolverines jumped ahead on a pair of Dykhoff goals in the first period. Phillips assisted on both of them. Jase Jensen answered for the Blades cutting the lead to 2-1.

However, the Wolverines struck for three goals in the second period, taking command of the game. Lleyten Pettit, Phillips and Logan Robinson found the net in the period.

The Wolverines tacked on a pair of goals in the third period by Phillips and Dykhoff, which sealed the game for the Wolverines.

The Wolverines open the home portion of its schedule with a pair of weekend tilts, beginning on Friday, Dec. 1 with a 7 p.m start against Becker. They return home to take on Ely on Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. Both games are at the Wadena Ice Arena.
