One might think that a trip to the state volleyball tournament would lead to a tough start on the hockey rink for Prairie Centre’s Kylee Hopp. However, it has been just the opposite. Hopp tallied her third and fourth goals of the season, helping the Blue Devils to a 3-2 win over the Marshall Tigers on Nov. 21 at the Red Baron Arena in Marshall, Minn.
Hopp played an integral role on the Wolverines volleyball team, which meant a delay to the start of her hockey season. Instead of practicing for hockey, she was helping her volleyball team extend their season to a fourth place finish in the Class A Volleyball tournament. Hopp made sure the time away from the pond would not hamper her game.
The defenseman has scored in each of the Prairie Centre’s first three games, leading the team with four goals from the blueline.
It was a scoreless first period but Lupita Mora broke the scoreless tie in the second period. Mora tallied her third goal of the season and third in three games, giving Prairie Centre the early lead.
The Tigers rallied back with a pair of goals in the second period by Olivia Peterson and Amaya Strivens, giving the Tigers the 2-1 lead.
Hopp scored her first of two goals late in the second period, tying the game at two. Hopp’s unassisted goal gave the Blue Devils momentum into the third period.
Hopp gave the Blue Devils the lead for good with a power play goal in the third period. Hopp’s unassisted goal was just enough for the Blue Devils as Isabelle Hovel shut the door in relief. Hovel finished with 12 saves in 12 shots in 25 plus minutes of work. Mackenzie Och started and made 16 saves on 18 shots in starting the first half of the game.
Alexis Moat suffered the loss, stopping 24 of 27 shots in the nets for the Tigers.
The victory moves Prairie Centre to 3-1-0 on the season. Next action for the Blue Devils is on Nov. 28 when they return home to Sauk Centre to play host to Mound Westonka at 7 p.m.
