Prairie Centre opens season with a split

The Prairie Centre Blue Devils opened the season with a split, defeating Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato 4-1 on Nov. 16 before falling to Luverne 5-3 on Nov. 18 in their first two games of the season.

On Nov. 16 the Blue Devils started quickly with two first period tallies, before adding a pair in the third period to seal the victory. Lupita Mora, Gabby Olson, Anna Nedoroscik and Kylee Hopp found the net for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils were strong on the special teams in the game, killing five penalties and tallying a power play goal on one of their three opportunities.

It was more than enough support for Isabelle Hovel. Hovel stopped 24 of 25 shots in earning her first win.

Mora started the scoring with a power play goal. Ally Ecker assisted on the goal. Her goal was followed by an unassisted tally by Gabby Olson.

It remained 2-0 until the third period when Nedoroscik found the net just 20 seconds into the third period. Olson and Shelby Otte assisted on the goal.

The Dragons finally tallied when Anna Brock beat Hovel. Gabby Pieti and Mary Ridgway assisted on the goal. Hopp added an insurance marck when she found the net, midway through the third period, sealing the game for the Blue Devils.

Avery Stilwell finished with 22 saves on 26 shots in the loss for the Dragons.

The success that Prairie Centre had on special teams in game one, came back to haunt them in game two. Luverne capitalized on three of their five power play opportunities, scoring two of the three power play goals in the back-breaking second period.

Kylee Hopp and Lupita Mora tallied their second goals of the season, while Reece Ritter cracked the score sheet for the first time with a third period tally. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the second period outburst.

Hopp started the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Mackenzie Och assisted on the tally, giving the Blue Devils the first period lead.

However, Luverne turned the momentum with two goals in a minute in the second period.. Kamryn VanBatavia started with a power play goal, which was followed by a goal from Regan Feit.

Mora found the net for the Blue Devils, evening the game at two, but Luverne struck for a pair of goals. Claire Baustian gave Luverne the lead for good with an even strength goal. Feit scored her second goal of the period, on the power play, giving Luverne the 4-2 edge.

Luverne extended the lead when Reghan Bork scored on the power play in the third period. Ritter tallied late for the Blue Devils , with Gabby Olson picking up the assist.
