Krause receives mini-camp invite to Kansas City

A trio of former Bemidji State football players were invited to NFL minicamps Saturday.

Offensive linemen Jake Krause and Brandon Schindler each accepted rookie minicamp invitations from NFL teams Saturday evening as Krause accepted an invite from the Kansas City Chiefs, and Schindler from the Indianapolis Colts. Later in the evening, receiver Blake Holder received a minicamp invite from the San Francisco 49ers.

Krause, a native of Wadena, had caught the eye of many NFL scouts during his senior season in 2017. He followed up his senior campaign with an impressive showing in March at the Gophers’ pro day where he outperformed 11 University of Minnesota players on the bench press with pro scouts in attendance.

Now, the linemen have made their first steps towards the NFL.

“I’m very excited. I’ve always said I just needed an opportunity and, you know, it didn’t come in the draft and it didn’t come in free agency,” Krause said. “So if this is my opportunity, then I’m going to go and do what I can with it, and the rest is in God’s hands.”

While neither was selected in the NFL Draft, which concluded after seven rounds Saturday evening, they did not need to wait long before learning teams wanted them to come to their rookie minicamps for a tryout.

“It took probably about like 20 minutes after the draft,” said Krause, who watched the draft with his family at a Bemidji restaurant. “... We were just kind of chilling and hanging out and seeing how it went, and literally we walked out to the parking lot and I got the call.”

Rookie minicamps begin next week and last for three days. Krause and Schindler will compete with other undrafted rookies with hopes of getting a contract offer.

“I’m super pumped,” Krause said. “Just gotta show them what I can do, and hopefully prove some people wrong and fulfill my dream of playing in the NFL.”
