The Long Prairie-Grey Eagle Thunder hit from the free throw line in the closing minutes, holding off a surging Wadena-Deer Creek boys basketball team on Nov. 30 in the season opener for both teams.
The Thunder earned a 55-47 victory led by Blake Fossland and Gabe Abraham. Fossland finished with a game high of 21 points, while Abraham finished with 17 points.
The Thunder held a 25-18 lead at the break, but the Wolverines caught fire from the 3-point line at the start of the second half. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the duo of Fossland and Abraham.
The Wolverines had four players finish in double figures with Ryan Anderson leading the way with 13 points. Noah Ross and Bereket Loer finished with 11 points each, while Jonathan Pantages finished with 10 points.
The Thunder had a strong shooting night from the field, hitting 47 percent of their shots. They were five of 13 from beyond the arc and hit on 14 of their 21 free throws, helping them ice the game in the final minutes.
The Wolverines were 16 of 49 from the field, while hitting seven of their 22 attempts from beyond the arc. They hit eight of their 12 free throw attempts in the game.
The Wolverines fall to 0-1 overall on the season and will have a small break before their home opener. The Wolverines take on Staples-Motley on Friday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wadena-DC High School gymnasium.
