Shockers hammer Lakers in home opener

Jake Krause went 4-for-5, drove in four runs and scored twice Sunday as the Wadena-Deer Creek Shockers opened their 2013 baseball season with a 13-3 victory in eight frames over the Pelican Rapids Lakers.

The Shockers out-slugged the Lakers 13-7. Jayme George went 2-for-5 with one RBI, Jordan Wohlwend went 2-for-4, scored twice and stole a base, J.J. Truax went 2-for-5 with one RBI and Cody Redfield went 2-for-3.

“We came out swinging,” WDC Manager Jayme George said. “We came out and played pretty good ball.”

The Shockers backed up their hitting with some nifty fielding plays. Wohlwend turned an unassisted double play in the fifth. Gannon and Jayme George ended bases-loaded threats with diving grabs.

Wohlwend got the starting nod but gave way to Jayme George in the fourth. Wohlwend earned the win and Josh Holmes took the loss.

The Lakers hurt themselves by committing four fielding errors. The Shockers only committed one miscue.

Alex Johnson led the Lakers with 3-for-4 effort at the plate. Adam Johnson was 2-for-4 in the loss.

Following a 1:30 p.m. game Saturday with Henning, the Shockers will travel to Bluffton Sunday for a 1:30 p.m. game. The Shockers will play an 18-game schedule this season. George said the team is slated to host their nine home games in Deer Creek at this time. A baseball field is expected to be built in Wadena this summer, replacing the field which was destroyed by the 2010 tornado.
