Pettit earns MVP, Mr. Hustle awards

Photo by Brian Hansel Senior forward Bridger Pettit received the Wadena-Deer Creek boys’ hockey MVP and Mr. Hustle awards recently for his play during the 2012-2013 season.

Bridger Pettit earned the Most Valuable Player and Mr. Hustle awards Sunday night as the Wadena-Deer Creek boys’ hockey team held their season-ending banquet at The Cove.

Joining Pettit in receiving a team award was Shane Motschenbacher, who was named the club’s Most Improved Player.

The Wolverines went from 1-24 in 2011-2012 to 15-12 in 2012-2013, posting their first winning season in seven years.

Mitchell Swanson and Christian Berg joined Pettit in racking up 199 points, the fourth-best in the 25-year history of the WDC program. Swanson ended his career with 79 goals and 53 assists for 132 points. Pettit racked up 62 goals and 69 assists. Swanson and Pettit ranked sixth and seventh on WDC’s all-time career scoring list.

Swanson racked up two scoring records as he tied Tanner Picht of Morris/Benson for the most goals in the state (48).

Swanson set a new team record for single game scoring Feb 12 when he scored nine points in a 12-8 victory over Morris/Benson. Swanson also estabished a team record for goals in a single game (seven) in a 10-5 victory Jan. 4 over Greenway of Coleraine.

The 2012-2013 Wolverines racked up the third highest power play percentage in team history (34.1). The Wolverines tied a team record with three short-handed goals against Bagley.

Captains for the 2013-2014 season will be Wesley Janson and Dylan Phillips.
