Bears surprise Pirates in West Sub-Section 5A tilt

Ashton Kapphahn pumped in 29 points and Arei Stokes added 19 as seventh-seeded Bertha-Hewitt stunned the second-seeded Verndale 71-55 Feb. 28 in the first round of West Sub-Section 5A tournament play.

The Pirates defeated the Bears twice during the regular season and took a 29-25 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bears dominated the second half, scoring 46-26. Kapphahn was 17 of 18 at the free-throw line.

“It seemed like she always had the ball at the end,” Verndale Head Coach Art Schluttner said.

The Bears converted on 21 of 40 field goal shots for a 53 percent shooting clip. They canned 26 of their 34 free-throw attempts for a 77 percent average.

“It was one of those games where from the get-go the breaks didn’t go our way,” Schluttner said.

The Bears held Verndale all-time scoring leader Teresa Moenkedick to nine points. Eighth-grader Shania Glenz led the Verndale attack with a season-high 22 tallies.

“She came out and hit her shots,” Schluttner said. “She’s got the skills and the drive to be a very special kid.”

Jordyn Glenz scored 11 points. The Pirates shot 39 percent from the field and made only one of their 13 3-point shots.

The quick exit from the playoffs left the Pirates with a 19-7 season log. The Pirates won the Park Region Conference title and claimed victories in 12 of their last 13 games of the season.
