Cards hold Wolverines to season-low 33 points

The state-ranked Staples-Motley Cardinals kept their unbeaten Mid-State Conference record intact at home Jan. 25 with a 55-33 victory over Wadena-Deer Creek.

The 33-point scoring night was a season-low for the Wolverines. Keith Ferris saw his club put up 48 points in a Dec. 4 loss to Staples-Motley on the local hardcourt.

The outcome was far from certain at halftime as the Cards took a paltry 23-21 lead into the locker room.

The Cards converted 18 of 20 free throw shots for a sizzling 90 percent. Staples-Motley posted a 32-13 scoring advantage in the second half.

"Defensively, we came out and played one of the best first halves I have seen us play," Ferris said. "We only scored six points in the last 10 minutes of the game. We need to put a complete game together."

The victory gave Class AA's eighth-seeded Cardinals a 7-0 record in Mid-State play and a 12-4 mark overall. The Wolverines dropped to 3-3 in the Mid-State and 10-8 overall.

The Wolverines are slated to host Mid-State foe Pequot Lakes on Tuesday and Mid-State rival Crosby-Ironton on Friday.
